The history of Christmas trees goes back to the symbolic use of evergreens in ancient Egypt and Rome and continues with the German tradition of candlelit Christmas trees first brought to America in the 1800s.

Santa Claus—otherwise known as Saint Nicholas or Kris Kringle— has a long history steeped in Christmas traditions. Today, he is thought of mainly as the jolly man in red who brings toys to good girls and boys on Christmas Eve, but his story stretches all the way back to the 3rd century, when Saint Nicholas walked the earth and became the patron saint of children.

Decorative nutcracker dolls began being popularized outside of Europe after the Second World War, when numerous American soldiers stationed in Germany came home to the US with German nutcrackers as souvenirs. Further popularization came from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, a ballet adaptation of Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The ballet, became a favorite holiday tradition across the US and helped make nutcracker dolls a Christmas decoration and a seasonal icon across Western culture.
